Obtaining a Work Visa
For international employees to work in Afghanistan, they first need to secure a work visa. This process begins with the employer, who must be registered with the Afghanistan Central Business Registry or ACBR. The employer issues an invitation letter that includes the employee’s full name, passport number, and passport copies, explaining the employee’s expertise and reason for the invitation.
The invitation letter is submitted to the Ministry of Commerce and Industries, which reviews the request and forwards it to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. Once approved, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs instructs the relevant consulate to issue the work visa. The employee must visit the consulate to obtain the visa before traveling to Afghanistan. The consulate will issue a work visa valid for one month.
Arriving and Obtaining a Work Permit
Upon arrival of international employees in Afghanistan, the employer must officially introduce them to the Ministry of Labor and Social Affairs through a formal letter. The employee must meet basic qualifications, such as being over 18 and having the necessary educational documents. They must also be present in Afghanistan and undergo a medical checkup at a facility approved by the Ministry of Labor and Social Affairs. After fulfilling these requirements, the Ministry will issue a one-year work permit, for a fee of USD 200. This permit can be renewed annually.
A work permit is required before applying for a work visa. Once the employee has a work permit, they can apply to extend the work visa for either six months or one year, depending on the validity of the work permit. The work visa fee is AFN 1,000.
This process ensures that both employers and international employees comply with Afghan regulations while facilitating smooth entry and employment.
